Let's recap the Q1 fundraising totals for Indiana's US Senate race.
Senator Dick Lugar: $973,000 raised, $3 million cash on hand.
Congressman Joe Donnelly: $363,000 raised, $338,000 cash on hand.
Treasurer Richard Mourdock: $159,000 raised, $122,000 cash on hand.
Lugar outraised Donnelly by almost a factor of three, and Mourdock by a factor of more than six. The cash on hand numbers are even more striking. As a wise man once said: "Having money's not everything. Not having it is."
I know Treasurer Mourdock is counting on out of state interests to swoop in and do the work that he can't do on his own, but he's not doing them any favors. If he can't even keep up with the leading Democrat contender, why would they bail him out again if he somehow makes it to the general?
Since the Civil War Hoosiers haven't responded well to outsiders exerting their force on our small but mighty state. Mourdock has been open that he'll need plenty of outside-Indiana funds to win this election.
He is continually popping in and out of the media making claims about his 'lists' and all the ways he can win this race from nearly every source BUT Indiana.
Just because you are the loudest the voice in the room, does not mean you offer the best options.
Personally, we wonder if Mourdock's staff gets it, if they take him out every morning and let him know.
